How Many Pages Does Your Website Actually Need?

Written by Donatos, Squarespace Web Designer & Founder of By Donatos

One of the most common questions I get when starting a new project is:

“How many pages should my website have?”

The instinct is often:

“Let’s add everything – a homepage, about page, services, portfolio, blog, FAQ, contact, testimonials, press, gallery, booking, shop…”

Here’s the truth:
More pages don’t make your site better.

In fact, more pages often dilute your message and confuse your visitor.

Let’s break it down.

🎯 Your Website Should Support a Single Goal

Every site has (or should have) one primary job:

  • Book a call

  • Sell a product

  • Showcase a portfolio

  • Get someone to join your email list

  • Establish trust and awareness

If your navigation bar has 9+ pages with equal weight, it’s like walking into a store where everything is yelling “look at me!”

Instead, the best websites feel clear and focused.

🎯 A High-Converting Website Often Has Just 3 – 5 Core Pages

Here’s a lean but powerful structure I use for most of my clients:

  1. Homepage

    • High-impact headline

    • Clear overview of what you do

    • Call-to-action (CTA) that leads deeper

  2. About Page

    • Personal connection

    • Credibility & story

    • Why you’re the right fit

  3. Services / Work / Portfolio

    • Clear offering

    • Who it’s for

    • Examples or social proof

  4. Contact Page

    • Simple form

    • Location or email

    • Optional booking link

  5. (Optional) Blog / FAQ / Shop — only if they support your main goal

🚫 What to Avoid

  • Pages that say nothing new
Don’t separate “Mission,” “Vision,” and “Values” if they could live in one section.

  • Too much repetition
If every service has its own page, they better each have unique value.

  • Dead-end pages
Always guide the visitor: “What should they do next?”

💡 Ask Yourself:

  • Can someone understand what I offer in under 10 seconds?

  • Is my navigation helping or distracting?

  • Does each page lead somewhere meaningful?

🧭 The Right Structure = More Conversions

Websites aren't brochures — they’re tools.
If you want yours to work, keep it focused.
