Your Homepage Headline Is Costing You Clients And Here’s How to Fix It

Written by Donatos, Squarespace Web Designer & Founder of By Donatos

Let me guess.

You launched your Squarespace website, shared it with your network, posted it on LinkedIn... and waited. But no one's booking. No one's signing up.

Here’s what might be wrong, your homepage headline.

Because on the internet, you don’t get 5 seconds… You get 1.

What Makes a Great Homepage Headline?

Here’s a simple formula I use when writing for clients:

[What you do] + [For who] + [Benefit / Differentiator]

Examples:

  • “Brand Design for Women Entrepreneurs Ready to Launch Their Dream Biz”

  • “Copywriting for SaaS Startups That Want to Convert, Not Confuse”

  • “Custom Squarespace Websites That Feel as Premium as Your Service”

You don’t need to be clever, you need to be clear.

Mistakes to Avoid (I See These Every Day)

1. “Welcome to My Website”

Generic. Boring. Waste of space.
People don’t care about your welcome, they care about their problem.

2. “Helping People Achieve Their Dreams”

Vague. Who are you helping? What kind of dreams?

3. “Designer. Strategist. Dreamer.”

You’re trying to be cool, but you’re not being helpful. Don’t describe yourself, describe what you do for others.

Fix Your Headline in 10 Minutes

Here’s a fast exercise:

  1. Write down:

    • What you offer

    • Who your ideal client is

    • What they get from working with you

  2. Turn it into a simple sentence.

Example:

“I design Squarespace websites for solo business owners who need a site that works, not just looks pretty.”

Now punch it up:

“Squarespace Websites for Solo Business Owners Who Need Results, Not Templates.”

Boom, instant clarity.

Where Should It Go?

Right at the top of your homepage, above the fold.
Bonus: Pair it with a strong CTA button.
Example:

Let’s build yours → Book a call
